This is one of the many Proceedings volumes that Bourchier has project managed for the British Academy. We copy-edit the manuscripts, liaising with the authors over changes and queries, arrange jacket design, typesetting and proof-reading and commission and edit the index. The illustration here shows some proof-reading corrections, marked up onto the PDF.

Having worked on the Palgrave Dictionary of Economics, Bourchier was engaged to copy-edit and proof-read this flagship Palgrave reference work. With hundreds of individually commissioned entries and signpost articles, the Encyclopaedia required meticulous attention to detail. Bourchier created a tracker system enable all parties involved in production to trace each article at the various production stages.

We proofread in Arabic, Bahasa, Chinese, Devanagari, English, French, German, Italian, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Urdu. Using Adobe Acrobat mark-up tools, we annotate corrections and revisions on digital proofs, or, if the client prefers, we mark up a hard-copy proof by hand.
First, our proofreaders focus on errors introduced in typesetting – inconsistent design features, infelicitous line-end breaks, clumsy stacking of words. Next, they function as overall quality checkers, picking up anything missed during copyediting – mismatches between figures and captions, inconsistencies in spellings, empty note cues, and so on.
Their final task is to check that all revisions have been correctly taken in and, with a senior quality checker, sign off the final proof as ready for printing.
