Initially commissioned only to translate the manuscript from Arabic to English, Bourchier was subsequently asked to produce the book and ship it to New York in time for a conference three months later. This called for multiple skills and resources: page layout, image enhancement, proof-reading, cover design, printing and, not least, negotiations with the US Customs to ensure the books were released in time for the conference.

A truly hands-on project that rattled through at breakneck speed. The Bourchier team was involved from inception to book launch – arranging transcriptions of the original interviews on which the text is based, writing and editing the sixty odd feature articles, working with the designer, proof-reading, correcting. The result is a unique survey, luxuriously produced, of the ethos of collecting works of art and art patronage across the Middle East, based on interviews with the key players.

This was, quite literally, a cut and paste job, combining sentences, paragraphs, pages, figures and tables from the previous edition, together with updates and new material. The result succeeds in packing a lot of information onto the page and at the same time retains a fresh, user-friendly design. Hailed as an important contribution to development economics, it has become as a classic in the field.
